"You've reached Jacques Schnee, CEO of the Schnee [Dust] Company. Leave your name and number and I'll call you back at my earliest convenience."
(Have a message for Jacques and don't want to make a thread? You're in the right place! Please note the message type in the subject and the date if it's backdated.)
[Qubine had been curious about the human culture for a while now, particularly about how parents raise their children. Right now, Jacques was the only human he knew of that was a parent. And given the conversation Qubine had with Winter (and being really fucking annoyed by it), he figured now would be a good time as any to ask about it.]
Jacques.
[He keeps his emotions schooled for the most part, but the displeased tone can be heard around the edges...]
[Jacques looks up from his work, slightly nervous. The giant dragon did not sound happy, and while he's seemed harmless enough so far, he's still a big ass dragon.
[Qubine sighs, trying to reign in what could be a temper hiding beneath his icy exterior. He doesn't want to take it out on Jacques, lest he hide behind both of his daughters. While he's confident that he could handle them, he doesn't particularly want to deal with it, and would prefer to keep his claws clean.]
I've just been curious about something. How do you raise your offspring?
[That was the furthest thing from what he was expecting.]
I sent them to school and taught them about the family business. [Also yelled and screamed at them a bunch, maybe slapped Weiss once or twice, but you know, details.] Why do you ask?
[That was a completely foreign concept. Teaching about the family business is quite a bit more familiar. He's seen some dragons doing that. Swipp teaching his swapping business to his daughters, Pipp and Tripp, for starters. Percival and Brahm were learning medicine from their mother Orphne, as well as alchemy from Baldwin.]
...I was just curious. I used to be a father, once upon a time, but...not a very good one.
[Qubine had kids. Somewhere in some distant land there is a place filled with dragons. Remind him to put that on his Places to Never Visit list.]
I'm sure you were better than you think you were. This may surprise you, but there have been times when I was not the best of fathers, and Whitley still turned out alright. [Yup. Just the one did.] It's natural for a father to doubt themselves but I'm sure you raised fine children.
[Well shit, he hadn't realized Qubine had lost his kids. That was probably rough.]
My condolences. I had no idea. It was through no fault of your own, I'm guessing.
[Ah, so he had caught that, had he?]
Whitley happens to be the inheritor of the Schnee Dust Company and as such is the one that people usually are referring to when they inquire about my children. Winter and Weiss are both fine young ladies. They can be... difficult, at times, but they tend to do what they think is best, and really that's all I can ask for.
[He lets out a deep sigh. There were so many ways to look at the
situation. But no matter how he looks at it, he can't pin the blame solely
on one party.]
I've been wondering about that ever since that day. It's easiest to pin
the blame on the Beastclans for directly killing them. On the other hand,
they could have survived if they had only retreated after losing their
healer.
As for me...I fear that I didn't spare enough time to be a father to them.
I was more focused on being the leader of my clan. And because I was the
clan leader, my sons felt that I had high expectations of them. And...they
weren't wrong in that regard. I did expect better of them. They tried too
hard to make me proud, and they died for it.
[He smirks at the thought of Weiss and Winter being
difficult.]
Yes, they've both made that much very clear. However...it is important to
be proud of your offspring for who they are, regardless of what they
choose to do. Each dragon has a responsibility to find their own place in
the world, and...I would assume this holds true for humans as well.
[Wait, something murdered the dragons? Yeah, Jacques will be staying as far away from that world as he can.]
That's terrible; I'm very sorry to hear that.
I understand where you're coming from, though. My children may be all grown up here, but back home where they were raised I run the largest company in the world. Managing a company and raising a family can be quite the challenge. But it's just as important to praise them as it is to criticize them, which can help alleviate some of that pressure.
[Jacques, ever the master of the mask, is able to keep his expression in check when Qubine starts rambling on about the whole "it's who they are that matters" thing. He's heard it a million times, and he's thought it was bullshit a million times, but he certainly can't say that out loud.]
Yes, in fact individuality is highly encouraged! "You can be whatever you want to be" is commonly said to children so that they're aware of what their options are. [Incidentally, none of the Schnee kids had ever been told that.]
[Yeah, Qubine would definitely have words if he ever finds out the
truth. Not that he would actively hunt Jacques down, but he'd wait until a
casual conversation comes up to bring it up.]
Praise...yes...it is equally important. There was another dragon...the
first dragon I raised in my new clan. He could be considered a son to me,
although he is not my biological son. Coco was one of the first to survive
the Passage and become a formidable warrior in his own right. He is
certainly a son to be proud of. It's almost fascinating to think of how
he's changed and grown since he was a hatchling.
[He really shouldn't be surprised. Jacques himself finds the art of combat to be quite barbaric and uncivilized, so he'll have to be careful not to mention that to him.]
Is that why you aren't proud of your other sons? Because they were bested in combat?
[Yeah, Qubine's already been through that, when Pelindar accused all warriors of being savages. Qubine took him for a ride and gave him a heavy dose of reality, and he wouldn't hesitate to do it again.]
I wouldn't say I'm not proud of them. They gave it their best effort, as well as the rest of the fallen. I'm just...disappointed.
[Jacques nods in understanding. His kids might not have died, but they did did fall in their own way (at least to him), and he was definitely disappointed in their decisions.]
I can be hard when you expected so much more of them, just for them to let you down, especially after all you've done for them to try to ready them for things to come.
Father, Weiss is not responding to her communicator. Is she with you? Has she made any contact within the past eight hours? Respond promptly, if you would, this may be an emergency.
She embarked on a bounty hunt with an agreement to meet for dinner after she'd finished. More than three hours have passed since the agreed upon time of our meeting with no notification.
It is possible that circumstances have caused her to be delayed, and a need for stealth might necessitate that her communicator be deactivated. But unlikely.
[Jacques frowns slightly. That would be rather unlike her, wouldn't it? Besides, it's not like these things don't have a silent function on them.]
I can certainly see why you're concerned, though I'm sure she can handle herself; I paid top dollar for her to learn those combat skills she's so fond of. An interest she gained from you.
[Can you hear the distaste in his voice?]
If you know where the bounty was I could ask the Guardian of the area to send a team to investigate the area. I'll also check with the local hospital to see if she's been brought in.
[Look at him willing to dedicate five minutes of his day to look for his daughter! And people think he's a bad father.]
[She hears it, all right. And her expression cools as she lowers her lashes, lifting her head a little higher. It's a good thing she picked up those combat skills, considering how dangerous the world of Remnant is.]
We're trying to discover which bounty it was that she took, as it was not previously specified. But unless she went missing in Genessia City, I wouldn't count on the Guardians to be of much help.
[They might surprise her, certainly, but she has little faith that they'll prove reliable in this.]
The hospital is a good place to begin, however. Thank you.
[Boy howdy that sure is some disdain for the Guardians. He hasn't had much of an issue with his own (they do what he says so that might be part of it), but Winter always was a special snowflake.]
Let me know if you find her and I'll let you know if I hear anything about her or from her.
